Former US President Donald Trump on Monday declared the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games a ‘disgrace’ following criticism directed at its creators for what some perceived as an excessive display.
“I’m very open-minded but I thought what they did was a disgrace,” Trump told Fox News.
His remarks came after Catholic organizations and French bishops denounced a particular scene in the ceremony involving dancers, drag queens, and a DJ striking poses reminiscent of the Last Supper, although the creators maintained that it was not intended to depict the religious event. The sequence sparked international backlash from Christian groups and far-right politicians on social media platforms.
When host Laura Ingraham inquired about his potential actions if reelected as president in time for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, Trump responded, “We won’t be having a ‘Last Supper’ as portrayed the way they portrayed it last night.”
In response to the criticism, Thomas Jolly, the director of the opening ceremony, later stated that his intention for the production was to “reconcile” and “repair.”
