IMD’s advisory
Preceding the coldwave warning, IMD has advised people to take necessary precautions that includes wearing warm clothing, staying indoors and avoiding exposure to cold winds. IMD has also advised people to keep themselves updated with the latest weather forecast and alerts.
In this article we will tell you multiple ways of checking the coldwave alert issued by IMD and also understand the colour codes of alerts.
Alert colour codes and their meaning
To better understand the warning issued by IMD, it is important to understand the different colour codes used by the weather forecasting agency.
Green – No advisory: A green alert means there might be some weather event, but it doesn’t need any advisory.
Yellow – Be aware: A yellow alert indicates bad weather conditions. The situation might worsen, causing disruptions to daily life.
Orange – Be prepared: An orange alert is issued when extremely bad weather is expected. It may disrupt transport, rail, road, and air, as well as the power supply.
Red – Take action: A red alert is issued when extremely bad weather conditions are expected to disrupt transport and power supply, posing a risk to life.
How to check the coldwave alert in your region
- Visit the IMD website at mausam.imd.gov.in.
- Click on the Warnings Subdivisionwise link under the Warnings section at the top.
- Select your subdivision from the list of subdivisions.
- Check the Cold Wave column or icon on the map for the latest updates on cold wave alerts in your region.
You can also check the cold wave alert from IMD using Google Weather.
For this, Open Google app and tap on the weather icon at the top (placed below the search bar)
Look for the Coldwave Alert label. If you see it, tap on it to check the warning and see if your region is listed there.
