KANPUR: In a case of road rage, a car driver crushed to death an irrigation department employee who tried to stop him from fleeing after accidentally hitting the latter’s car at VIP road in Kanpur on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as Ravindra Kumar Tiwari, 47, a resident of FM Colony, Civil Lines.
According to police, the car driven by 28-year-old Shubham Vimal, a resident of Old Kanpur, had collided with that of the victim at VIP road around 9pm on Sunday.
However, when Tiwari tried to stop the car by coming in front of its bonnet, the driver trampled and dragged him for a few metres, before fleeing.
In the struggle to escape, police claimed, the car driver also hit a few other cars that came his way.
“Several police teams have been roped in to scan and collect CCTV footage from the area, which will be presented in the court as evidence so that strictest punishment could be awarded to the accused driver,” said deputy commissioner of police, Central, RS Gautam.
The victim was later taken to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
The footage of the incident which went viral on social media caused unrest among the local public.
Police swung into action and the details of the vehicle were flashed by the cops on the wireless.
A massive search operation was launched leading to the arrest of the driver -Shubham Vimal – from his relatives’ place in Unnao.
The police also seized the vehicle involved in the crime, said the DCP.
