NEW DELHI: Suraj Revanna, JD(S) MLC and brother of Prajwal Revanna, has been given bail by a Karnataka court in an alleged sexual abuse case.
People’s representative court on Monday gave conditional bail to Revanna charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Suraj Revanna was arrested by the Hassan police on June 23 for allegedly sodomising a party worker.
He was arrested after an FIR was registered against him at the Holenarasipura police station on June 22 under Section 377 (unnatural sex) of the IPC.
The allegations against Suraj Revanna stem from a complaint filed by a 27-year-old male party worker.
Who is Suraj Revanna?
Suraj Revanna is a member of a prominent political family in Karnataka. He is the brother of former MP Prajwal Revanna, and son of JD(S) MLA HD Revanna and Bhavani Revanna, who has also been accused of abducting one of Prajwal’s alleged sexual assault victims.
The Revanna brothers are grandsons of former prime minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda and nephews of Union minister HD Kumaraswamy. He is currently a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from Hassan district.
He was the 8th member of the Gowda family to make his way into politics. The Revanna family has been embroiled in controversy following the surfacing of alleged obscene videos involving Prajwal Revanna. Prajwal was arrested by the SIT at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on May 31 upon his return from Germany.
What are the allegations?
According to the complainant, Suraj Revanna allegedly committed “unnatural offences” and sexually abused him at his Gannikada farm in Holenarasipura on June 16. In his complaint, the victim stated that he was an active JD(S) worker and had met Suraj at Kollangi village during the last Lok Sabha poll campaigns.
“We exchanged phone numbers. Later, he told me to meet him at his farm in Gannikada on June 16. I met policemen at the entrance, who allowed me in when I showed Suraj’s message. As soon as I entered Suraj’s room, he got up, touched me inappropriately and gave a peck on my lips. Suraj promised to help me grow politically if I lived with him. He then undressed me and committed unnatural sex despite my objections, even as he threatened me. When I told Shivakumar about it, he tried to lure me with the promise of a job and money from Suraj,” he said.
