Dhananjay of AISA was elected JNUSU president, polling 922 votes more than Umesh Chandra Ajmeera of the RSS-affiliated ABVP.Dhananjay secured 2,598 votes as opposed to Ajmeera’s 1,676. As in the recent past, major Left parties had contested the polls together under the banner of United Left.
Fourth sweep in a row for Left at JNU
This is the fourth consecutive time since 2017 that the Left (or candidates backed by it) swept all four central panel posts of the student body, where elections were held for the first time since 2019.
For the vice president’s position, Avijit Ghosh from SFI triumphed with 2,409 votes, beating ABVP’s Deepika Sharma, who got 927 votes. Priyanshi Arya, a BAPSA candidate supported by United Left after its own candidate was disqualified hours before the voting, clinched the general secretary’s post with 2,887 votes. Md Sajid (AISF) was elected joint secretary by a margin of 508 votes. Sajid polled 2574 votes, ahead of ABVP’s Govind Dangi (2,066).
The results were greeted with chants of ‘Lal salam’ in the Left camp as students celebrated an early Holi with faces smeared in pink and red. Swati Singh, the Left’s nominee for general secretary’s post, sat on a hunger strike for over 32 hours claiming that her candidacy was revoked just hours before the elections.
