Kanishka Soni moved to the USA a year ago for better career prospects. She says, “For the past one year, I was based in New York and after getting a job as a pharmaceutical manager, I shifted to Los Angeles last month. Apart from my regular job, I also sing in shows.”
However, a scary incident has left her quite disturbed. Talking about it, she says, “On September 13, I was assaulted by a stranger while returning home at night.I have been living in this country for a while now and have heard of such incidents. But this was the first time that I experienced it. My colleague was dropping me home in her car at around 10:30 pm. My house is just five minutes away. As I sat in the car and tried to close the door, an unknown man blocked the door, came close to me and started screaming and pushing me.”
She adds, “At first, I didn’t understand what was happening, but I realised that he was trying to steal my laptop and other belongings. I screamed back and somehow defended myself. After a few moments, he gave up and ran away. Even my colleague was terrified by this incident and I couldn’t sleep at night. In fact, now I am too scared to walk alone on the road.”
The actress has reported the incident to the police. She says, “The day after this incident, I went to the LA Police and reported it. They took down my statement and told me that some people are homeless and living illegally in the area and resort to stealing. They have increased security around my workplace.”
Kanishka is glad that she knows self-defence and urges women to learn some techniques. The actress, who has been a part of shows like Baal Veer, Firangi Bahu and Diya Aur Baati Hum, says, “The reason why I decided to speak about this incident is that women need to learn self-defence. That is what helped me in this situation. I learnt self-defence when I was in India and I feel every woman should learn it, too.”
