NEW DELHI: The police investigation has revealed new details about accused Sanjoy Roy who was arrested in the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata.
Roy was reportedly addicted to violent and disturbing pornography, as evidenced by the content found on his mobile phone.
“The pornography content in his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent.We wonder about the state of his mind as watching such things is quite unnatural,” a police officer told PTI.
The 33-year-old, who joined the Kolkata Police as civic volunteer in 2019, had been married at least four times and was known as womaniser.
According to police, Roy had a history of physically abusing his wives, and his neighbors reported that noises of fights from his house were a regular occurrence. His first wife was from Behala, his second from Park Circus, his third from Barrackpore, and his fourth from Alipore.
“He got married for the third time to a girl from Barrackpore. But that also did not last long. Then he married a girl from the city’s Alipore area,” a neighbour said.
The fourth wife, who worked at a petrol pump, had filed a complaint of domestic violence against Roy, which continued until their legal separation.

As a trained boxer, Roy had developed close relationships with several senior police officers over the years, leading to his transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and his posting at the police outpost at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident took place. His proximity to senior officers and hospital authorities allowed him unhindered access to all departments, and no one dared to question his movements.
The police have booked Roy under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS, and the investigation is ongoing. The accused’s influence within the force was such that he had access to the Kolkata Police’s 4th battalion’s barracks, where he reportedly stayed and slept after committing the crime.
