Tragic details have emerged about how a young police constable died while celebrating his engagement.

Liam Trimmer, 29, was surrounded by friends and family at his engagement party in Western Australia on Sunday when he fell, cutting the carotid artery in his neck and bleeding out.

While WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said people from the party tried to help, Trimmer died.

“Everything was done to try and save him, but it wasn’t to be and I know everyone that was involved are really, really hurting at the moment and I think they wish they could just wake up from this nightmare,” Commissioner Blanch told 9News Perth.

Trimmer had moved from the UK and graduated from Joondalup Police Academy in 2013 before moving to Kalgoorie in 2017.

He joined the gang crime squad and tactical response group and has been described as an “extraordinary officer” and “fine example of WA policing”.

“(He was) a very, very confident, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that’s how sad this is,” Commissioner Blanch said.

WA Police Union president Paul Gale said the police family has been rocked.

“Every time a death occurs for a police officer, it doesn’t matter how, it really does rock the core of the police family,” he said.

Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti offered her condolences and said Trimmer’s death was an “awful, awful tragedy”.

“My condolences go out to the family and friends of that particular officer,” she said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner while WA police are offering their support to Trimmer’s family and colleagues.
