The forecast for Cirque du Soleil’s revolutionary new show is: rain.
Luzia, performed under the Big Top, is set in an alternative reality Mexico and, in a Cirque du Soleil first, incorporates rain in the performance.
“It’s a groundbreaking aspect of the show,” Cirque’s Olivier Fillion Boutini said.
“It aims to represent an essential part of Mexico’s climate and cultural identity. Mexico experiences quite a lot of rainfall, making water a pivotal element in its culture.
“The presence of water not only enhances the acrobatic scenes but also becomes a character in the show, adding an immersive element for the audience.”
Boutini said the show takes audiences on a “surrealistic journey through a vibrant world filled with wonders, playfulness and striking artistry.”
This year, Cirque marks its 25th anniversary of touring shows in Australia.
The company says Luzia is its most ambitious production to date.
“Luzia pays tribute to the entire Mexican history and culture which is really a first for Cirque du Soleil,” Boutini said.
“We tried to incorporate elements and symbols that are proper to Mexico, without being cliche.
“Some costumes like the flower dress are using groundbreaking technologies and are used for the first time in a Cirque du Soleil show.
“The use of water and the water curtain makes Luzia one of the most unique Cirque du Soleil shows to visit Australia.”
There are 120 cast and crew from 23 countries in Luzia, with 11 from Australia.
Gold Coast acrobat Helena Merten joined the Luzia show in 2017.
“I had dreamt of being in the circus since I was seven years old,” Ms Merten said.
“It will be great to come home to Australia and have all my family and friends finally see what I have been doing.”
Luzia opens at Flemington Racecourse on March 24.
