NAGPUR/CHANDRAPUR: Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Tuesday urged EC to cancel the candidature of Maharashtra forests minister and BJP Chandrapur candidate Sudhir Mungantiwar for alleged “incestuous remarks” against Congress at a rally on Monday later addressed by PM Narendra Modi.
Mungantiwar’s remarks went viral, triggered outrage, ignited protests across the state and led to a police complaint.Although PM was yet to touch down at the rally venue in Chandrapur’s Morwa when Mungantiwar went ballistic, deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and CM Eknath Shinde were present on the dais.
In their complaint to the poll panel, MVA leaders urged swift action. Chief spokesperson of Congress in state, Atul Londhe, demanded Mungantiwar’s disqualification.
Mungantiwar accused Congress of cherry-picking and distorting his statements. “If Congress is reminded of atrocities on Sikhs in 1984, their leaders will find it difficult to swallow. The party can’t suppress injustice on people by making a doctored clip viral,” Mungantiwar posted on X.
The women’s wing of Congress staged demonstrations in Chandrapur, with the party saying the “minister’s crass comments had shocked the nation’s conscience”. A Congress leader in Nagpur, Gajraj Hattewar, lodged a complaint at Tehsil police station against Mungantiwar.
Shiv Sena (UBT) national spokesperson Kishore Tiwari asked whether such language was condoned by the senior BJP leadership and sought deputy CM Fadnavis’s intervention. “EC must take exemplary action,” Tiwari told TOI.
Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) national spokesperson Clyde Crasto echoed the demands. Crasto described the minister’s utterances as “shameful, disgusting and smacking of hate”. “He is either mentally unstable or is trying to create disturbances. EC must debar him,” Crasto said.
