NEW DELHI: Mind games in cricket are a crucial psychological aspect of the sport, where players and teams try to unsettle their opponents, gain a mental edge, and influence their decision-making or performance. While cricket is a physical game, the mental battles on the field can often determine the outcome of key moments in matches.
India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is well-known for using mind games on the cricket field. His approach is often playful and energetic, using banter and tactical awareness to unsettle opponents and create pressure.
During a recent TV show India captain Rohit Sharma had told how Pant had deliberately brought a pause in the T20 World Cup final to disturb the momentum of South Africa.
Now during a talk show organised by Star Sports, Pant tells what had actually happened during the final.
In a viral video uploaded by a fan, Pant says, “I actually thinking what to do because the momentum had suddenly shifted (in South Africa’s favour), they had scored plenty of runs in 2-3 overs, so I was thinking when will that moment come when we will the World Cup final.”
As the video of Pant getting treatment from the Team India physio played in the background screen, Pant said, “I was asking the physio to take time, when he asked if my knee is fine I said, ‘Bhaiya, main testing kar raha tha’. Sometimes you have to do these types of things in matches, I’m not saying it works every time, but it does work some times and if it works at that kind of a moment, then nothing like it.”
India won the T20 World Cup title with a thrilling seven-run victory over South Africa in a classic final at Kensington Oval on June 29.
Pant’s use of mind games is unique because it often combines humor with pressure tactics. His infectious energy and unpredictability make him a formidable opponent both as a wicketkeeper and a batsman.
Mind games in cricket are an integral part of the battle between bat and ball. The ability to handle pressure, maintain focus, and outthink opponents can make the difference between success and failure.
While physical skills are essential, those who can stay mentally strong, withstand pressure, and effectively use mind games are often the ones who thrive at the highest level.
