NEW DELHI: Several senior police officers in Jammu and Kashmir, including IGPs and DIGs, have been transferred, with many districts to get new police chiefs.
This reshuffling of top police officials comes in the wake of the Election Commission‘s announcement that it will declare the poll schedule for Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative assembly on Friday, marking the first assembly election in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
In December 2023, the Supreme Court directed the central government to complete the election process in the Union Territory by September 30, 2024.
These upcoming elections will be the first in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade, following the last assembly election held in 2014. The previous PDP-BJP coalition government collapsed in June 2018 when the BJP withdrew its support from then-chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.
The Jammu and Kashmir general administrative department on Thursday night issued immediate orders for 89 transfers and postings. These changes involve deputy commissioners of Poonch and Bandipora districts, as well as secretaries, commissioners, director generals, managing directors, and directors across various departments.
The Election Commission instructed the Union Territory administration to transfer officers from their home districts, a standard procedure carried out before elections.
