A 23-year-old man is expected to face court on Friday after he was arrested over an alleged home invasion in Melbourne’s east.
Police will allege the Hoppers Crossing man was one of four men who forced their way into a Beckett Rd home in Donvale on June 29 last year.
The arrest comes two day after a public appeal for help solving the alleged crime, as investigators revealed high-end jewellery worth up to $160,000 was believed to have been stolen.
On Wednesday, Victoria Police released computer-generated images of two men wanted for questioning, saying detectives believe the victims were targeted mistakenly.
The home’s residents, a 65-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man, were allegedly restrained and held at knifepoint for about an hour as their home was ransacked.
Eastern Region Crime Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Justin Mercovich said the duration of the ordeal was unusual.
“It’s not something that we see, to spend one hour inside a property with victims tied up is unusual,” he said on Wednesday.
“We believe that this incident is a case of mistaken identity or the (alleged) offenders acting on incorrect information.”
Police alleged the men demanded access to a safe they believed was at the home, while the residents said they did not have a safe.
The Hoppers Crossing man was charged with offences including aggravated home invasion, false imprisonment and theft and is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
A Victoria Police spokesman said the investigation remained ongoing and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
