JALANDHAR: Three missing minor daughters of a migrant couple from Bihar were on Monday found dead in a trunk in their one-room rented accommodation in Jalandhar district’s Kahanpur village.
The couple, who has been arrested for allegedly poisoning the children, told the police that they had taken the extreme step due to extreme poverty.
The couple had five children and the dead girls were aged 9, 7 and 4. Their two surviving children are a daughter and son, who are two and one year old, respectively.
When the police detained the children’s father for preliminary questioning on Monday, he was in an inebriated state.
Jalandhar (Rural) SSP Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar said Surinder Singh, the owner of the room in which Sushil Mandal was living with his family, called the police late on Sunday night to report that the three daughters of his tenant were missing since morning. The husband-wife duo also told police they could take care of only two children.
Surinder told the police that he noticed on Sunday evening that three of the girls were not around, and on not finding them after a search of the area, he informed the cops. When Surinder and three other neighbours went to Mandal’s house on Monday, he said that the three kids were lying dead in a trunk.
The SSP quoted the villagers as saying that Mandal was in an inebriated state on Sunday night as well as Monday morning. “When he was questioned about the suspicious circumstances surrounding the kids’ deaths, he told us that he and his wife Manju Rani had committed a grave mistake by lacing the girls’ milk with poison on Sunday morning and then stuffed their bodies into a trunk. He said they had taken the extreme step as he was unable to feed the kids,” SSP said.
