A search is underway after an aircraft reportedly crashed into Port Phillip Bay on Sunday afternoon.

The incident is understood to have occurred shortly before 2pm on Sunday, near Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the organisation was currently involved in a search after receiving “reports of an aircraft into the water off Mount Martha”.

Flight tracker FlightAware shows three helicopters circling an area of water about 15km northwest of Mount Martha airport as of 3.20pm.

According to Victoria Police, the incident was reported about 1.45pm, with emergency services called to The Esplanade in Mouth Martha.
“Police are investigating reports of an aircraft incident in Mount Martha,” a spokeswoman said.
“More information will be released when appropriate.”
