LUCKNOW: Amid his family‘s allegations that gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of poisoning, applications sent by him and his wife to the President of India in 2018 and 2019 reveal that he had already suffered two heart attacks while in jail and was a patient of high blood pressure and diabetes.
Mukhtar and his wife had petitioned the President in 2018 and 2019, seeking his release on medical grounds.Countering his family’s allegation of neglect, senior officials said that Mukhtar has been unwell and was attended by specialists as and when needed. He was earlier admitted to PGI Lucknow on Jan 9, 2018 and discharged on Jan 11. “During his confinement in Banda jail in UP from 2021 to 2024, Mukhtar underwent 84 consultations with doctors,” they say.

In a plea dated Sept 10, 2018, Mukhtar’s wife Afshan Ansari detailed his ailments to the President, citing diabetes, high blood pressure, spondylitis, and a slipped disc, and urged for his release.
She had alleged inadequate medical treatment led to a heart attack in Banda jail.
