NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s “Mangalsutra will not be safe under the Congress rule” remark, stating that her mother (Sonia Gandhi) “sacrificed Mangalsutra” for the nation.
“My mother’s ‘Mangalsutra’ was sacrificed for this country,” the Congress leader said referring to her father Rajiv Gandhi‘s assassination in the Sriperumbudur bomb blast in 1991.
PM Modi, who has unleashed a relentless attack against Congress over its manifesto, at a rally in Aligarh had said that the grand old party if voted to power would take away the assets of people and redistribute it.
Hitting out at PM Modi’s claims, Priyanka Gandhi at a poll rally in Karnataka said, “What talks are happening in this country? Two days back there were speeches that Congress wants to snatch your ‘Mangalsutra’. This country has been free for the past 75 years, and 55 years Congress was in power. Did Congress ever snatch your gold or ‘Mangalsutra’?.”
In a piercing attack on PM Modi, Priyanka said, “When there was war, Indira Gandhi (her grandmother and former prime minister) donated her gold.”
“My mother’s ‘Mangalsutra’ was sacrificed for this country,” referring to the assassination of her father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by terrorists. “Had Narendra Modi understood the importance of ‘Mangalsutra’, he would not have spoken such unethical things,” she added.
The entire controversy erupted after PM Modi drew a link between the Congress party’s pitch for redistribution of resources in its manifesto and his predecessor Manmohan Singh’s December 2006 statement that minorities have the first right to the country’s resources.
“Just look at their manifesto. What they have said is of grave concern and reflects their plan to implement their Maoist vision on the ground. They have said that if Congress gets to form govt, they would conduct a survey of everyone’s assets: how much gold our mothers and sisters have and their value would be computed, including the silver ornaments of our tribal sisters, the assets of govt employees, everything,” the Prime Minister claimed.
“They don’t stop at that. They go on to say that the assets will be equitably redistributed. Is it acceptable to you? Does govt have the right to expropriate your hard-earned assets? Should the govt seize your assets?” PM said, adding that for women, their gold is not just an ornament but something that is intrinsically linked to their aspiration and self-respect,” PM Modi had said.
