SURAT: A day after claiming that Congress betrayed him in the 2017 assembly elections, the disqualified Congress candidate for the Surat parliamentary constituency said he would not join the BJP but continue doing social work. Nilesh Kumbhani claimed that he was at his home, but rumours are being shared that he was on the run. “I have no plans to join the BJP but I will continue doing social work,” Kumbhani told TOI.“My supporters were upset as they were being stopped from campaigning while the leaders were inactive. They planned to take revenge for what Congress did with me. I was not aware of their plan,” he claimed.
“I was going to meet the senior leadership of Congress for legal action when the party workers staged a protest at my house after which I changed my mind,” he added. He refuted the allegations of accepting money from any political party for his form cancellation.
Meanwhile, Congress workers have uploaded messages on social media announcing cash rewards to anyone who provides the location of Kumbhani. Indian Youth Congress secretary Pradip Sindhav posted a Rs 5,000 reward with call to “sea arch for the traitor and teach him a lesson.” “All Congress members want to understand from Kumbhani why he did this. He has partially confessed his act but we want more clarity,” said Sindhav.
Police have provided security to Kumbhani to maintain law and order situation. “I am at home and not hiding. Anyone can come to meet me. Police have provided security and I have not asked for it,” he added.
“Those who earned money using wrong practices during campaigning are upset due to all this. They could not earn money due to my form cancellation and hence insulting and opposing me,” said Kumbhani.
