MUMBAI: After revising the tie-breaking policy for NEET 2024 and bringing in a computerised draw to decide the rank of joint scorers, NTA has gone back to its old policy of ranking based on performance and not lucky draw.
Now again, the rank of joint scorers will be based on the proportion of incorrect and correct answers in all and individual subjects.
The tie-breaking policy for National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is necessary to assign ranks when two or more candidates achieve the same score, resulting in a tie.
In Feb, National Testing Agency (NTA) had released an information brochure for NEET 2024, wherein it was decided that higher marks in biology, chemistry and physics – in that order – followed by a computerised draw with no human intervention will be followed to decide the ranks during ties. But now a revised brochure has been uploaded on the NTA portal, which reverts to the old policy where a higher mark in each of the three subjects, followed by the proportion of incorrect and correct answers attempted in all, and then the individual subjects, will be considered for breaking the score tie.
The revised tie-breaking policy was followed in NEET 2023 too – candidates getting higher marks in biology, chemistry and physics, followed by candidates with less proportion of incorrect and correct answers attempted in all subjects, and then followed by candidates with less proportion of incorrect and correct answers attempted in individual subjects, starting with biology.
Parent representative Sudha Shenoy said the decision to retain the old policy is better for students as it will be based on their performance and there will be an incentive for those who are careful about negative marking. “The policy that was released in the Feb brochure was completely based on a ‘lucky draw’,” said Shenoy.
Till 2021, the age of the student was also considered under the tie-breaking policy after their scores in individual subjects and the proportion of negative marking. The older student got an advantage. In 2020, two students, a girl from Delhi and a boy from Odisha, scored 720 out of 720, but the girl lost the top rank as she was younger to the boy.
