NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to the nation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.
In a post on X, he said, “Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha! May this special occasion further cement the bonds of harmony and togetherness in our society. May everyone be happy and healthy.”
Eid-ul-Adha is one of the most significant Islamic holidays, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and obedience to God.According to the Quranic tale, Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of devotion. However, before he could proceed with the sacrifice, God intervened and provided a ram as an offering instead. This event is also mentioned in the Christian and Jewish traditions, with Abraham being asked to sacrifice his other son, Isaac.
The celebration of Eid al-Adha is marked by the slaughtering of livestock and animals, with the meat being distributed among the poor. This act of sharing is a fundamental aspect of the holiday, symbolizing compassion and generosity.
The occasion also coincides with the final rites of the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, making it a highly revered observance for Muslims worldwide.
This year, Eid al-Adha was observed on Monday in many Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Bangladesh. However, in other parts of the world, such as Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen, the holiday was celebrated on Sunday.
