NEW DELHI: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi minister Atishi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to overthrow the Kejriwal government by imposing President’s rule in the capital.
Atishi’s accusation came after the President’s office sent the BJP’s claims of a ‘constitutional crisis’ in Delhi to the Ministry of Home Affairs for review.
Speaking to PTI, Atishi argued that the BJP is using indirect means to topple the popular AAP government.Referring to instances in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Manipur, Atishi accused the BJP of toppling the governments in the country through ‘Operation Lotus.’
“They also tried Operation Lotus in Delhi to topple the government by poaching the AAP MLAs, but they failed. Now, they are conspiring to impose the President’s Rule through the back door to topple the popular government of Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi,” she alleged.
Atishi stated that the people of Delhi ‘love’ Kejriwal for providing quality schools, hospitals, electric buses, free bus travel for women, and free pilgrimages for the elderly.
In response to these accusations, BJP’s Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, claimed that the city’s governance had reached a standstill.
Gupta accused that “paralysis of governance” in Delhi was due to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as he has been in judicial custody since his arrest on March 21 in the excise policy case.
On Monday, Delhi’s LoP issued a statement accusing the AAP government of violating the Constitution by failing to establish the sixth Delhi Finance Commission and not acting on the CAG report.
A delegation of BJP MLAs met with President Murmu on Friday and submitted a memorandum, requesting her ‘urgent intervention’ in the ‘constitutional crisis plaguing Delhi’ caused by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s imprisonment.
“The president, taking cognisance of the memorandum, has forwarded it to the home secretary for appropriate attention,” Gupta said, sharing a letter from the president’s secretariat.
Gupta said that he has urged the home secretary to take “immediate and appropriate action” on the matter.
“Kejriwal has refused to resign, which is creating an unprecedented situation that has led to a complete breakdown of governance in Delhi. Critical administrative decisions are being delayed and essential services are severely affected, directly impacting the lives of Delhi’s citizens,” he said.
Atishi warned that if the Kejriwal government is toppled, the people of Delhi will respond strongly, predicting that the BJP would be completely wiped out in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
She said, “The BJP will lose even the eight seats it holds now and will be reduced to zero in the upcoming assembly polls and the AAP will win all the 70 seats.”
The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for early next year.
