NEW DELHI: Celebrating the release of eight former Navy personnel sentenced to death in Qatar, BJP on Monday said their safe return was yet another testament to rising global goodwill for India since Narendra Modi took over the reins and his commitment to “no Indian will be left behind” policy that he has crafted and followed.
Talking to reporters, Union minister Smriti Irani said the Navy veterans’ safe return became possible because of govt’s efforts. Referring to evacuation of Indians during crises at different points of time, she said Modi govt’s priority has consistently been to ensure safe “ghar wapsi” and protection of Indians. ” Under Operation Ganga, more than 22,000 Indians returned from Ukraine. Over 25,000 came home in Operation Kaveri from Sudan. More than 5,000 Indians stranded after Nepal’s earthquake returned through Operation Maitri. During Covid, more than 2 crore Indians returned home,” she said.
Union minister Anurag Thakur said the veterans’ homecoming was a moment of happiness and further strengthened belief in the seriousness and ability of Modi govt to protect its citizens at any cost. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi means the guarantee of life, limb and liberty of the people of India across the globe,” he said in a post on X.
Return of the Navy veterans was “proof of Modi’s guarantee to ensure no Indian is left behind”, said Anil Baluni, head of the party’s media cell. “We operated hundreds of flights and leveraged all our resources to bring back our fellow citizens from all over during the pandemic, when citizens of countries far more resourceful had been left to fend for themselves and were languishing in foreign countries without any support. The evacuation of our citizens from the battle zones of Ukraine and Yemen would not have been possible without this commitment of our PM,” he added.
His colleague Shazia Ilmi lauded what she called “a big diplomatic win”.
