LUCKNOW: A radioactive leak occurred at Chaudhary Charan Singh (Amausi) Airport in Lucknow, triggering panic on Saturday noon. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with the fire department and police, reached the site. An area of 1.5 kilometres around the site was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Chief Fire Officer, Lucknow, Mangesh Kumar, told TOI that according to initial reports, a flight from Lucknow to Guwahati was being prepared for departure.
“During a routine scan at Terminal 3, the scanner emitted a warning beep. The alarm was triggered by a wooden box containing electronic fluorine liquid,” said Kumar.
As workers opened the box, it led to panic at the airport, with people rushing in all directions. Authorities swiftly evacuated the area.
An airport spokesperson reported that around 10 am, a security alarm went off in the cargo area.
“Security personnel immediately arrived at the scene to handle the situation and informed the SDRF and NDRF teams. All the teams have arrived at the site. In this incident, no employees have lost consciousness, nor has anyone reported any health issues,” he said.
