JAMMU: A fierce anti-terror operation, involving heavy exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces, is under way in the Tattapani area of Kalakote in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, according to officials.
Official sources said, “The encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists late on Monday evening following a cordon and search operation in a forest area of the district.
“A joint team of the army and Jammu and Kashmir Police had cordoned off the general forest area in Kalakote on Monday following information about suspicious movement,” they said.
“The terrorists fired at the troops in an attempt to break the cordon, resulting in retaliatory fire,” officials said.
Official sources revealed that security forces suspect the presence of two to three heavily armed terrorists in the jungle area, where the operation has been launched.
Meanwhile, PRO Defence Jammu Lt Col Suneel Bartwal said, “Following successful operations in the same area on September 13, due to a continual flow of intelligence, area domination, and constant pressure on the terrorists, specific intelligence about the movement of some suspected individuals was received on October 1 by the police. A joint operation by the Indian Army and police was launched in the general area of Kalakote.”
Col Bartwal added that intense operations are currently under way.
On September 12-13, security forces, in a joint anti-terror operation in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, killed one terrorist while one soldier was martyred and three security personnel were injured.
A six-year-old Indian Army dog, Kent (female Labrador), of the Army’s 21 Dog unit, who was at the forefront of Op Sujaligala, also sacrificed her life while leading a column of soldiers on the trail of fleeing terrorists and came under heavy hostile fire.
Prior to this, an unidentified terrorist was killed and a police personnel was injured during an encounter between terrorists and security forces in the general forest area of Tuli-Chasana in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on September 4.
On August 5, security forces killed one Pakistani terrorist during an encounter in the Gundha-Rajouri encounter, while the body of the second terrorist, believed to have escaped in an injured condition, was found at Khawas (on the axis of Rajouri-Reasi districts) at Dhakikot, Reasi, on August 18.
