A retired army personnel, Vijay Kumar,60, was allegedly charred to death at his residence in Meerut‘s Kankar Khera area early on Monday, said police.
Police said the victim was drunk when the incident took place and he failed to escape. Locals immediately informed police after which a team rushed to the spot. Fire tenders doused the fire and recovered the body, which was later sent for autopsy.
SP (city) Ayush Vikram Singh told TOI, “Kumar was sleeping when his bed abruptly caught fire.He was residing alone in the rented accommodation and it was completely burnt. Locals said that during power cuts, he used to use candles.”
“During investigation, it came to the fore that the former junior commissioned officer (JCO) had three wives, and none of them were living with him. We contacted his wives but they refused to take the body. Later, a relative took the body for cremation. No formal complaint has been received in the matter so far,” the SP said.
