BAREILLY: An FIR was registered against Sambhal’s MP, Zia-ur-Rahman Barq, in an alleged power theft case after power officials found some issues with the electric meter.
The FIR is registered at Nakhasa Anti Power Theft police station under section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act (Amendment) 2003 on the complaint of SDO Santosh Tripathi, who in the complaint said that the MP has a domestic power connection of 2 KW. However, he bypassed the meter for using appliances like AC, fridge, etc. The power department found a load of 16,480 watts in the MP’s house.
The UP Power Corporation’s team was accompanied by local police, Rapid Action Force, and PAC jawans. On Tuesday, the officials replaced the old meter with a smart meter after suspecting the possibility of tampering.

There were two meters installed at the MP’s house. According to an official, one of the two meters installed at Barq’s residence showed zero power consumption while the load was over 5 kilowatts.
Meanwhile, Rahman’s counsel, Taufeeq Ahmad, said, “There is no power theft at the MP’s house. There are two metres installed, and we do have a 5KW solar connection and a generator. There are only four members who live in this house. We will take appropriate steps against the incorrect action.”
