NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its order on a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.
Five-judge Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant reserved the judgement after hearing the arguments for 16 days.
The top court said if any lawyer appearing for the petitioners or respondents wishes to file a written submission can do so in the next three days. The submission should not extend beyond two pages, it said.
The Central government revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
The Supreme Court on Monday expressed serious reservations over arguments from petitioners, who have challenged the scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, that Article 370 after the lapse of J&K Constituent Assembly (CA) in 1957 had become unamendable and said, “We cannot carve a position for Article 370 which is higher than the basic structure”.
