Senator Jane Hume appeared to shock even herself with an X-rated comment on Tuesday.
The Senator for Victoria was leading the Budget Estimates 2024-25 Economics Legislation Committee when she welcomed ASIC chairman Joe Longo.
She then made reference to lycra followed by a racy comment that caused the committee room to erupt with laughter.
“I feel this is very awkward,” Senator Hume said.
“Every time I see Mr Longo now it seems to be at the gym on Saturday mornings. So I apologise for the lycra.”
“His or yours?” asks someone off camera.
“Less worthy men have seen me in far less,” Senator Hume said.
To which Mr Longo replied: “I want to reassure the committee that I will never be seen in lycra.”
Apparently even Senator Hume was surprised by her candid confession.
“Sorry, I forgot myself for a moment. I’m going to ask some questions about something serious now,” she said.
Senator Hume’s comment was met with mixed reactions after it was shared on X.
“How to completely discredit yourself in one sentence,” one person said.
“An own goal if ever there was one,” said another.
However many people applauded Ms Hume for making an otherwise dry committee more amusing.
“Utterly delightful,” one person said. “The reality of day to day life and a refreshing banter.
“The location of the gym in Parliament House means we all get to see a lot of Lycra, and a lot of legs in sweaty shorts passing by during sitting weeks.”
Senator Hume separated from her husband Andrew in 2013. She has three adult children.
