MUMBAI: Financial Services Institution Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, MD, State Bank of India, as the next chairman of the bank. The board conducted interviews to select a successor for the incumbent Dinesh Khara, whose extended term ends in Aug 2024.
According to a statement from FSIB, the board interviewed three candidates on June 29 for the position of chairman at SBI.”Keeping in view their performance in the interviews, their overall experience, and the existing parameters, the board recommends CS Setty for the position of chairman,” the statement said. The other two candidates are understood to be Ashwini Kumar Tewari and Vinay Tonse.
Setty (born September 1965) currently oversees the international banking, global markets, and technology divisions at SBI. He started his career with the bank in 1988 as a probationary officer. Setty holds a BSc degree in agriculture and is a certified associate of Indian Institute of Bankers.
Before being appointed MD in 2020, he held several critical positions at SBI, such as deputy MD of the stressed assets resolution group, chief general manager, general manager in the corporate accounts group, deputy general manager in the mid-corporate group, and vice-president and head of syndications at SBI’s New York branch.
Initially, as MD, he led the retail and digital banking verticals before taking on his current responsibilities. His term as MD was extended by two years in Jan 2023.
FSIB is an autonomous body in India responsible for recommending appointments and evaluating the performance of top management in public sector banks, insurance companies, and financial institutions.
