NEW DELHI: A Chandigarh court on Monday framed charges against former Haryana sports minister and BJP leader Sandeep Singh in connection with a sexual harassment case filed by a junior female coach. The additional chief judicial magistrate Rahul Garg’s court rejected the discharge application submitted by Singh, complainant’s lawyer Deepanshu Bansal told news agency PTI.
A junior athletics coach from Haryana filed a complaint against the former minister two years ago, alleging molestation.In her complaint, she claimed that on July 1, 2022, Sandeep summoned her to his residence, where he molested her and “tore up her clothes.”
Furthermore, the court also turned down the complainant’s request to include section 376 (rape) in the case. The next hearing date has been scheduled for August 17, as stated by Bansal.
Singh, who previously served as the captain of the Indian hockey team, said that he had been wrongfully accused in this case.
The case against Singh was registered based on the woman’s complaint filed at the Sector-26 police station in Chandigarh on December 31, 2022. At the time the complaint was lodged, Singh, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, held the position of minister.
The court invoked various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Singh, including sections 354, 354A, 354B, 506 and 509. Additionally, Singh’s plea for discharge was denied by the court.
