NEW DELHI: Star India opener Shubman Gill on Wednesday closed in on world no.1 ODI batsman Babar Azam in the latest rankings released by the ICC, narrowing the gap to a mere 6 points.
Pakistan skipper Babar, who has a total of 829 rating points is closely followed by Gill with 823 points.
While Babar has had a shaky World Cup so far with 157 runs from five matches, Gill who missed a couple of games due to health concerns has scored 95 runs in the three matches in the ongoing cricketing extravaganza.
However, Gill is not the only one to close on Babar’s top ranking. In-form Proteas opener Quinton de Kock is within Babar’s reach as he sits in third place in the ODI rankings. De Kock has had an incredible start to the World Cup that has already seen the opener score three astounding centuries.
De Kock’s teammate Heinrich Klaasen has moved up seven places to fourth and a new career-high rating.
The experienced duo Virat Kohli (improved three spots) and David Warner (up two spots) shared fifth place on the rankings after pulling off some good performances.
Ever-reliable middle-order batter Daryl Mitchell also jumped 16 places to 13th overall after 268 runs from four innings at the World Cup.
In the bowling charts, Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood maintained a narrow lead at the top with a number of key challengers in contention to overtake him.
India pacer Mohammed Siraj is now Hazlewood’s nearest rival as he moved up one place after picking up six wickets from five matches at the World Cup.
South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj rose two places to third and a new career-high rating following his seven wickets at the tournament.
