The alleged murder of a mother has sent shockwaves through a tight-knit Queensland town after she was allegedly run over by a tractor slasher in a suspected domestic violence incident.
Yadwinder Singh, 44, was charged with murder and interfering with a corpse on Friday after his wife Amarjit Kaur Sardar, 41, was found dead at their property in Woodhill, south of Brisbane.
Officers were called to the property about 9.30am on Thursday and discovered the mother-of-two had suffered “significant injuries”.
Mr Singh, who works as a truck driver, is believed to have called emergency services to report his wife’s death. But paramedics were unable to save her and Mrs Sardar was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are currently reviewing recordings on the couple’s phones which need to be translated.
According to the Brisbane Times, the recordings are understood to include videos made of each other.
Detective Inspector Knight said police would also review the recordings of the conversation Mr Singh had with the QAS operator when he called to report his wife had died.
“We’ve recovered those recordings and we’ve reviewed them,” he said.
“Essentially he reported that his wife had passed away and there was some limited follow up questions that were fed to him by the QAS operators to try to assess her condition.”
The couple, who share two teenage children, bought their 55.5-hectare property in 2017, after moving from Brisbane. The property contains animals and sugar cane.
Detective Knight told media on Friday police expect an investigation at the property to last for days.
“It’s a complex crime scene because you’ve got a lot of farm equipment, you’ve got a lot of farm dwellings or structures on the property and you’ve got a lot of open or vacant land,” he said.
“It’s heavily covered in terms of ground cover.”
Police have removed a sedan, a tractor and a slasher attachment from the farm as part of their investigation.
In court documents obtained by NCA NewsWire, Mr Singh’s birthplace is listed as Khabe Rajputan, a village in the Amritsar district in Punjab, India.
Mrs Sardar’s tragic death has rocked the small quiet town of Woodhill.
Veresdale Hotel publican Leon Mills told the Courier Mail he never would “have expected this to happen in Woodhill”.
“It’s so quiet and peaceful.”
Another local, who did not wish to be named, told the publication the family “did not mix with the local community but the woman seemed like a nice person – quiet and devoted to her family”.
In a post on social media, The Centre For Women & Co in Logan said they were “sickened” by the tragic news..
“This death is close to home for many of us here at The Centre for Women & Co. and our sister services in the Logan and Scenic Rim Region,” the post read.
“We are incredibly saddened and sickened to hear of Amarjit’s alleged murder and can hardly bear to imagine her last moments as her life was allegedly stolen from her by a man who was meant to love and care for her.”
Mr Singh’s matter was mentioned in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday.
Corey Cook, representing Mr Singh, sought a brief of evidence and asked for an adjournment during his client’s brief mention.
The court was told a pathology report was at least three months away.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Karine Evans said there would be “lengthy” delays on forensic and mechanical evidence from the tractor allegedly involved.
Mr Singh will return to court on June 5.
He made no application for bail and was remanded in custody.
