A skydiver is fighting for his life after he crashed into a pole during a routine training jump.

The 29-year-old man was taking part in a training course and was attempting a solo jump when the accident happened on Sunday afternoon at Toogoolwah north of Brisbane.

Skydive Ramblers chief instructor Ben Nordkamp said the 29-year old skydiver was attempting a routine solo jump as part of a training course when the accident occurred.

“It is too early to understand what caused the incident, but we know that while the parachute opened and functioned normally, the man hit a post during his descent and sustained multiple serious injuries,” he said.

“At Ramblers, we do everything we can to make it as safe as possible for our students. This is a distressing time for everyone involved.

“We are also incredibly grateful to the first responders and emergency services personnel who provided first aid care and arranged for his helicopter flight to the Royal Brisbane Hospital late on Sunday.”

He was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition.

Queensland Ambulance were called to Toogoolwah, about 121km north of Brisbane off the Brisbane Valley Highway, at 3.45pm on Sunday.

An ambulance spokesman said the man collided with a pole when he was trying to land in his parachute sustaining head and chest injuries

The Australian Parachute Federation Stephen Porter said a safety and training officer travelled to the accident site on Monday to investigate what caused the accident.
