“The video suggesting that Gurpreet might have been deceived or coerced into joining the Russian military has shocked the family.
Gurpreet left for Russia on a two-month visa in January, but we later came to know that the Russian army had made him join them forcibly. He had told us recently over phone that he was doing fine,” said Ashu, the younger brother of Gurpreet. Family members said that initially they were happy to learn about Gurpreet joining the army but became concerned when they finally came to know about the ground reality. Many, including neighbours, have expressed solidarity with the family, seeking intervention by the Centre to ensure Gurpreet’s safe return home. “The central govt has been urged to investigate the matter and liaise with its Russian counterparts to ascertain the situation and take measures to facilitate Gurpreet’s safe return home,” they said.
At the same time, Gurpreet’s parents — father Naib Singh and mother Baljinder Kaur — continue to endure an agonising wait, praying for their son’s well-being and his swift and safe return home.
