NEW DELHI: Sudha Murty was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on Thursday in Parliament House, with in presence of her husband N R Narayana Murthy . Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath, with Leader of the house Piyush Goyal also present.
Murty, 73, former chairperson of Infosys Foundation and an acclaimed author, especially for children’s books, was nominated to Rajya Sabha last Friday, on International Women’s Day.
Recognised for her literary contributions in Kannada and English, Murty has received prestigious awards including the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar, Padma Shri in 2006, and the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
Murty’s support of Rs 10,000 from her emergency funds kickstarted Infosys, now a behemoth with a market cap exceeding USD 80 billion. She holds the distinction of being the first female engineer at TELCO.
Her daughter, Akshata, is married to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
