NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday found itself engulfed in a chaotic environ as a medley of senior advocates and lawyers appearing for various parties attempted to speak in one voice as soon as it took up a petition filed by West Bengal govt challenging a Calcutta HC order cancelling appointment of 25,000 teachers and other staff.
“There has to be some order in this chaos,” said a bench of CJI D Y Chandrachud & Justices J B Pardiwala & Manoj Misra before it divided the parties into 5 categories – West Bengal, WB Central School Services Commission, petitioners before HC leading to cancellation of appointments, persons whose appointments were cancelled by HC, & CBI.
The same bench had on May 7 stayed the Calcutta HC order but allowed CBI to continue with its probes into the alleged scam without arresting the tainted candidates or taking coercive action against officials involved.
The bench appointed four nodal counsel – Astha Sharma, Kunal Chatterjee, Shekhar Kumar & Shalini Kaul, & asked lawyers representing parties from the categories to submit written submissions raising core issues to nodal counsel to enable them prepare common compilation to facilitate easy reference to material during hearing.
Court allowed the writ petitioners to file affidavits responding to WB’s appeal in 2 weeks, failing which no further chance will be given.
