RAIPUR: An 18-year-old youth was blown to pieces in a Maoist IED blast in Bijapur district on Saturday – in the same village where a newborn was killed and her mother injured after being caught in an encounter between security forces and Maoists on Jan 1.
The body lay there for nearly three days as villagers were terrified of informing police. It wasn’t until Monday that someone alerted the cops and the body was recovered for autopsy.
The victim, Gadia, was walking down a forest path from a neighbouring village to his home in Mutvandi when he stepped on a camouflaged pressure IED.The explosion was heard in the village. Locals went to investigate and found Gadia dead, his body mangled.
Mutvandi is in Gangaloor, one of the worst Maoist-hit regions and the site of much bloodshed. A police statement said that recently, a villager of Kachilwar in Naimed was seriously injured in an IED blast.
Maoists plant IEDs to target security personnel but very often villagers fall victim.
On Jan 10 this year, an eight-year-old tribal girl and her mother were severely injured in a Maoist IED explosion in an inaccessible forest village in Bijapur district, but Maoists prevented medical help from reaching them.
