Adilabad: The Adilabad police have arrested a man for declaring ‘triple talaq’ to his first wife via a WhatsApp voice message. The case has been registered against Abdul Ateeq, a 32-year-old resident of KRK Colony in Adilabad town, who works as a transporter.
According to G Srinivas, the sub-inspector of Adilabad Police, Ateeq married Jasmine in 2017.The couple was blessed with two daughters, but marital discord soon set in, leading to frequent fights. For the past two years, the couple has been living separately, with Jasmine residing with her mother along with her daughters. Meanwhile, Ateeq remarried.
In 2023, Jasmine filed a harassment case against Ateeq. Additionally, she filed for maintenance in court, which resulted in the court ordering Ateeq to pay Rs 7,200 per month for the upkeep of his daughters. However, Ateeq failed to comply with this order, prompting Jasmine to approach the court again. The court then issued summons for Ateeq to appear.
Enraged by these developments, Ateeq sent a voice message on WhatsApp to Jasmine, declaring ‘triple talaq.’ Jasmine shared this message with relatives from both families, who advised her to file a legal complaint.
Following the advice, Jasmine approached the Adilabad police, who registered a case under Section 4 read with Section 3 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act. This act criminalizes the practice of instant divorce through ‘triple talaq.’
“The accused has been arrested and will be remanded to judicial custody,” said SI Srinivas. “This is the first case in Adilabad where we have applied this section alone. Previously, we have registered two cases where this section was added alongside harassment charges.”
