NEW DELHI: In a prolonged operation spanning over 15 hours, security forces neutralised a terrorist who had taken refuge in a border village located in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
Sharing details of the incident, ADGP Jammu revealed that two terrorists who opened fire in the village asked for water from several houses, raising villagers’ suspicions. As the villagers raised an alarm, the terrorists resorted to indiscriminate firing, injuring one person in the process.
“Two terrorists (who appeared to have freshly infiltrated) surfaced in village Saida Sukhal near Koota morh of Police Station Hira Nagar in the late evening of June. They asked for water from a few houses to which villagers grew suspicious and slammed the doors on them and a few raised hue and cry,” ADGP Jammu said in a post on X.
“The terrorists panicked and fired randomly in the air and also at one odd villagers who were passing by. SHO Hiranagar and SDPO rushed to the spot, engaged the terrorists and one terrorist got killed while lobbing a grenade at the police party,” he added.
Around 3 am, the other terrorist attempted to breach the security cordon by firing indiscriminately at the security forces. During this exchange, CRPF jawan Kabir Dass sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to his wounds at a hospital.
The official vehicles of DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, Sunil Gupta, and SSP Kathua, Anayat Ali Choudhary, were hit by multiple bullets during the operation, but both officers escaped unharmed.
The terror attack in Kathua occurred just two days after a separate incident in which terrorists targeted a bus carrying pilgrims from the Shiv Khori temple to Katra. The attack caused the vehicle to swerve off the road and plunge into a deep gorge, resulting in the tragic death of nine individuals and leaving 41 others injured.
