THANE: A nine-year-old boy was kidnapped and killed in Goregaon village of Badlapur by a neighbour who had demanded a ransom of Rs 20 lakh. It has not been established if the murder took place immediately after the boy went missing on Sunday or later after the ransom call was made.
Thane rural police have detained three persons, including the main suspect, Safwan Maulavi (24), a two-wheeler mechanic who was known to the victim’s family.Police suspect Maulavi needed money to construct a new house.
The child has been identified as Ibadat Bubere, son of Mudasir Bubere, a tailor. The elder brother of the accused had been an apprentice at Mudasir’s shop. Maulavi had apparently learned that Mudasir was earning well. The kidnapping took place Sunday at around 9pm during the evening namaz at the village masjid. When Ibadat’s parents returned home, they found he was missing; he had stepped out to buy ice cream.
As the family mounted a search, Mudasir got a phone call at around 9.40 pm from an unknown number.
Accused buried boy’s body at site for his new home
Following the abduction of nine-year-old Ibadat Budere on Sunday night while his family was out for prayers, a search was mounted for the boy. At 9.40pm, the child’s father received a call from the kidnapper, who said he would have to pay Rs 20 lakh if he wanted his son back.
Mudasir Budere approached Kulgaon police station, which formed teams to find the boy. The location of the mobile number was tracked down to a short distance from the village. Police found the number was registered in the name of a person from Mumbai.
Police suspecting the hand of someone from the village checked with a shopkeeper who recharged mobile numbers. The shopkeeper revealed that Safwan Maulavi (24) had recently recharged a phone with this number. After police picked him up for questioning, he revealed he had killed the boy and buried his body at the construction site for his new house which lay behind the old structure. The body was sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem.
As news of the murder spread, locals demanded strict punishment for the accused. Sensing more protests were likely, police has increased security in the village.
Asgar Bubere, a neighbour of Mudasir, said, “It is sad that he brutally killed an innocent boy during Ramzan month. Police should ensure maximum punishment by putting the case on the fast track.” Govind Patil, incharge of Kulgaon police station, told TOI, “We have detained some people, including Safwan. Once the last rites are completed, we will find out exactly why and how they killed the child.”
Police are still to deduce whether Safwan killed the boy before calling for ransom or afterwards. Locals said he was helping them search for Ibadat. Police sources said they found assault marks on the body suggesting the boy was beaten with a hard object and his mouth was gagged with polythene.
