The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken strong action against spam calls on Tuesday by blocking over 50 companies and disconnecting more than 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and other telecom resources.
This move comes after TRAI noticed a huge increase in spam calls, with over 7.9 lakh grievances reported against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTMs) in the first half of 2024. To tackle this issue, TRAI recently issued new rules asking all access providers to stop promotional calls from unregistered sources using different telecom technologies like SIP and PRI.If any telemarketer is found violating these rules, they could face a ban on all telecom resources for up to two years and be blacklisted, it said in a statement.

TRAI’s crackdown, initiated on August 13, 2024, aims to reduce spam calls and improve the telecom experience for consumers.
Access providers have started following TRAI’s rules, which should provide much-needed relief to consumers from spam calls. TRAI is asking everyone involved to follow these new rules to help create a spam-free communication experience.
