When asked about Kamala Harris, the frontrunner to replace Joe Biden in the US presidential election, the Kremlin on Monday said it had noted Harris’s “unfriendly rhetoric” against Russia.
“There have been some statements which were full of unfriendly rhetoric towards our country,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Reacting to US President Joe Biden dropping out of the November 5 presidential race, the Kremlin said the issue is not Russia’s priority.
However, Russia said it was not “too surprised” by Biden’s decision, adding further the US rival said the recent experience in dealing with Washington has “taught us not to be surprised by anything”.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the SHOT news outlet that presidential polls were still four months away and that a “lot can change”.
“The elections are still four months away, and that is a long period of time in which a lot can change,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“We need to be patient and carefully monitor what happens. The priority for us is the special military operation,” Peskov said, using the euphemism for the Ukraine war that Russian President Vladimir Putin prefers to call.
Speaking on Kamala Harris, who has been pulling all of the stops to assert her bid for the top US post ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), the Kremlin said the Asian-American democrat has “made no contribution” to the US-Russia relations.
The Kremlin spokesperson said it could not recall Harris contacting Putin.
While noting that relations with the United States have gone through the worst period in history, the spokesperson said the relationship with the US is important.
On Sunday, US President Joe Biden announced he is withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, leaving the Democratic nomination wide open just four months before the November election against Republican nominee Donald Trump.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” said Biden.
