BAREILLY: A 49-year-old man from the Dalit community, who was sitting in his grocery shop when he was hit by a stray bullet in the chest, has been struggling for three months to get it out.
The victim, Atmaram, was caught in a crossfire following an ugly brawl between two groups. On Saturday, he told TOI: “I am living with this strange feeling (of carrying a bullet in his chest) since that incident in Bareilly on July 29. I’m worried about septicaemia. It seems I’m waiting for my death.
“Though Atmaram was admitted to the local government hospital by police, doctors there “failed to remove the bullet and referred him to a private hospital”, which he said he “could not afford”.
“I’m the sole earning member in my family. We have already spent all the savings and are left with no money now. There has been no compensation, no assistance from anyone so far,” said Atmaram.
Investigating officer, sub-inspector Saurabh Yadav, told TOI, “We tried to support Atmaram in every possible way. We have written several times to the doctors for a surgery, but to no avail. I have shared this case with my seniors and expect them to escalate the matter.” Other officials claimed they were unaware of the incident. Circle officer, Shweta Yadav, said, “This incident has come to my notice only now. We will ensure that Atmaram gets medical assistance.”
Chief medical superintendent, Dr Alka Sharma, added, “I did not know about it. We have the facilities available and Atmaram’s surgery shouldn’t be a problem. I will personally look into this matter now.”
On July 29, the motorbike of Deepak Verma, one of those involved in the brawl, had brushed past the two-wheeler of Jatin Saini and Vikas Kumar. A heated argument ensued and soon turned ugly. Verma ran towards Atmaram’s shop to save his life as Jatin opened fire at him which hit Atmaram instead. The accused fled and Verma called the cops. Later, an FIR was registered on the complaint of Verma under IPC sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 504 (intentional insult).
Atmaram’s wife, Sangeeta, said, “The government hospital claim that my husband’s heart condition is weak and they don’t want to take any risk. “
