Police have released video of the shocking moment a shopkeeper chased off a thug armed with a tire iron during an alleged attempted robbery at a store in Melbourne’s southwest.

Officers understand the unknown man entered the general store on Duncans Rd in Werribee South armed with the automotive tool about 2pm on April 15, before demanding cash.

The 63-year-old shopkeeper is understood to have refused and is seen on CCTV footage, released by police on Monday, grabbing at the man before chasing him from the store.

The man, who has not been identified, is seen in the video getting into a white Toyota Camry without number plates before fleeing without taking any items from the store.

In a statement, police said it was lucky no one was injured in the alleged attack and called on the help identify the man in the video who they claim could assist with their inquiries.
