Vice Admiral David Johnston will replace Angus Campbell as the nation’s next Defence chief in July.
Anthony Albanese announced the major defence shake up on Tuesday alongside Defence Minister Richard Marles.
“Vice Admiral Johnson is a proven leader, with the experience, intellect and resolve to lead the ADF in a complex and rapidly changing global strategic environment,” the Prime Minister said Albanese said.
“Vice Admiral Johnson joined the naval academy back in 1978.
“His service career has spanned a period of profound change in our Defence Force, in our region, in the very nature of the challenges confronting our national security.”
