NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday announced the appointment of Vijayendra Yediyurappa, son of former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, as the president of its state unit.
This decision highlights the party’s recognition of the enduring influence of the veteran Lingayat leader on its political landscape.
Vijayendra, a skilled organizational leader and recently elected MLA, takes over from Nalinkumar Kateel. The 47-year-old leader, often considered the political heir to Yediyurappa, assumes the position after months of speculation about a change in leadership following the BJP’s significant defeat to the Congress in the May polls.
While it was anticipated that the BJP would choose a Lingayat leader for the role, the decision to appoint a first-time MLA, bypassing dynastic considerations that the party often criticizes in rivals, underscores the ongoing political significance of Yediyurappa. Despite his withdrawal from electoral politics, Yediyurappa’s influence remains palpable.
Notably, Yediyurappa’s elder son, B Y Raghavendra, serves as a Lok Sabha MP, and the BJP has traditionally avoided endorsing multiple family members in active politics.
