NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday shared about what gives judges the greatest satisfaction.
Reminiscing about a “Happy ending” case the CJI shared a heartwarming story about a couple who had filed for divorce and custody of their children in Patiala House Court. The husband had initiated the divorce proceedings, while the wife sought maintenance and custody of their children.
He said, “I remember one case in which a man had filed for a divorce in Patiala house court, while his wife had filed for maintenance and custody of children.”
However, during the pre-Lok adalat sitting, the couple made a surprising decision. He added, “During the pre-Lok adalat sitting they both decided that they want to stay together. When I asked them about it they shared that they are happy and want to live.”

As the CJI looked pleased talking about the case’s happy ending he further added, “You know ultimately as judges the greatest satisfaction for us is when we help parties resolve their disputes.”
“Of course, as judges we have to decide disputes, deliver judgments, decide them in accordance with law, but the most important thing is the satisfaction that you get when parties have resolved disputes amicably,” the CJI added, underlining the significance of facilitating peaceful resolutions in legal matters.
