Debris from a Ukrainian drone on Monday was intercepted by Russian defense systems after causing significant damage to residential buildings in Russia’s Saratov region, according to regional governor Roman Busargin.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the affected areas in Saratov and Engels, key cities located several hundred kilometers southeast of Moscow.Saratov, home to the “Volga Sky” residential complex, saw extensive damage when a drone crashed into it, evoking memories of a 9/11-type attack.
Engels, known for its strategic bomber military base, also suffered damage. This base has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian forces since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Video footage shared by the Russian news channel SHOT on Telegram showed severe damage to a high-rise residential building in Saratov, with windows across three floors shattered. In Engels, the top floor of another residential building was also damaged.
At least two people were seriously injured in the attacks, including a woman in critical condition. Governor Busargin confirmed that these incidents were the result of the Ukrainian drone attack.
Emergency services are actively responding to the situation in both Saratov and Engels.
