What is the big worry of US lawmakers
Lawmakers led by Michael McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sent a letter to the White House requesting a security review before the deal progresses. They worry about the potential export of cutting-edge technology like special chips and AI models that could enhance an AI’s capabilities.
The letter highlights the lack of clear regulations around exporting sensitive AI technology and the risk of such technology falling into the wrong hands. Lawmakers want to ensure US national security interests are protected.
They specifically requested an assessment of G42’s connections to China, including its government and military. This concern is heightened by a recent meeting between UAE and Chinese officials where AI cooperation was discussed.
The deal, announced in April, aims to establish the UAE as a global AI hub. G42 would use Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and collaborate on advanced AI services. Microsoft would also gain a board seat at G42.
While initial details didn’t mention high-end chip transfers, reports suggest Microsoft might export restricted AI chips in a later phase. Microsoft has acknowledged the potential for such transfers in the future.
Lawmakers also raised concerns about G42’s past involvement in digital surveillance and its connections to a controversial Emirati cybersecurity firm.
Not for the first time
This isn’t the first time US officials have raised concerns about G42. Earlier this year, another Congressman expressed worries about G42’s business ties with Chinese entities, including military and intelligence groups.
The scrutiny reflects broader US anxieties about China’s growing influence in the Middle East, including the UAE. Lawmakers want to ensure the deal doesn’t inadvertently benefit China’s AI ambitions.
