NEW DELHI: Kirti Azad, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, tragically lost his wife, Poonam on Monday. He shared the heartbreaking news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My wife, Poonam, is no more. She left for her heavenly abode at 12:40 PM. Thank you all for your good wishes.”

Responding to the sad news, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi expressed his condolences, saying, “My condolences to you, and may Almighty give you patience & strength on your wife’s demise.”

Azad, who also serves as the TMC MP from Bardhaman-Durgapur, received further support from West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee.She expressed her sorrow, saying, “I am saddened to learn that Poonam Jha Azad, the wife of our MP and World Cup-winning cricketer Kirti Azad, has passed away. I have known Poonam for a long time and was aware of her critical illness over the past few years. Kirti and other family members did their utmost and were always by her side in her final battle. My sincere condolences to Kirti and the family. May her soul rest in peace.”
